About Me

I see colours when I taste spirits. Here's why that matters.

Hi I'm Samantha

Let's start with that I have synaesthesia and hyperphantasia. When I taste and smell food and drinks, some of my senses get crossed, and my imagination becomes vivid scenery in my minds eye.

When I taste spirits, I don't just pick up flavours I see colours. Then those colours unfold into full scenes: movement, texture, atmosphere, sometimes entire landscapes. It's involuntary, which means it happens whether I want it to or not, and it happens the same way with the same spirit every time.

I've spent a long time being quietly fascinated by this. I've also spent nearly a decade working in the spirits industry, across brands including The Macallan, Highland Park, Benriach, and Glenglassaugh, and at some point it became obvious that these two things were connected.

What synaesthesia taught me is that perception is deeply personal. My experience of a glass of whisky is entirely mine. Yours is entirely yours. Neither of us is wrong. And that principle - that individual perception is valid and doesn't need to be corrected - is the foundation of every experience I design.

It's why I don't use prescribed tasting notes. It's why there are no right answers in my sessions. And it's why the experiences I create tend to feel different from what most people expect.
